The architecture of basalt reservoirs in the North Atlantic Igneous Province with implications for basalt carbon sequestration

Abstract Offshore CO 2 sequestration in basaltic formations of the North Atlantic Igneous Province may allow permanent storage of large volumes of CO 2 through rapid carbonate mineralization. Characterizing the internal architecture of such reservoirs is key to assessing the storage potential. In this study, six photogrammetry models and three boreholes on the Faroe Islands have been used to characterize the internal lava sequence architectures as a direct analogue to potential offshore North Atlantic Igneous Province storage sites. The studied formations are dominated by c. 5 to 50 m thick simple and compound lava flows, with drill core observations documenting a transition from pāhoehoe moving towards ‘a’ā lava flow types interbedded with thin (<5 m thick) volcaniclastic rock units. The identification of flow margin breccias is potentially important as these units form excellent reservoirs in several other localities globally. Stacked, thick simple flows may present sealing units associated with dense flow interiors. Connected porous and permeable lava flow crusts present potential reservoirs; however, the degree of secondary mineralization and alteration can alter initially good reservoir units to impermeable barriers for fluid flow. Large-scale reservoir volumes may be present mainly within both vesicular, fractured pāhoehoe and brecciated flow margins of transitional simple lava flows.

Integrated photogrammetry, lava geochemistry and palynological re-evaluation of the early evolution of the topographically constrained Mull Lava Field, Scotland

ABSTRACT Photogrammetry was used to elucidate complex strata relationships between isolated outcrops of the Palaeocene lava fields of SW Mull, part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. Subsequent sampling for lava geochemistry and palynology was undertaken based on interpretation of these photogrammetry models. Coherent units of Plateau- and Staffa-type lavas were identified using lava geochemistry, in particular using rare earth elements (REEs), divisions supported by multivariate statistics. Lavas with three different REE compositional clusters were identified within the Staffa magma type and four within the Plateau type of SW Mull. Understanding the distribution of these lava types was achieved using the interpreted photogrammetry models and analysis of prominent interbedded sedimentary rock units and their correlative unconformities. Probably the most renowned rocks of SW Mull are the thick columnar jointed lavas, including those of the Isle of Staffa. REE geochemistry reveals that lavas of both Staffa- and Plateau-type geochemistry occur as columnar jointed facies associated with what has previously been attributed to the Staffa Lava Formation. Instead, the SW Mull Lava Field was initiated by eruption of Plateau-type lava into a fault-controlled valley. Subsequent eruptions of Staffa-type lavas partially infilled this structure, which was finally overfilled by a thick succession of younger Plateau-type lavas. The geochemical characteristics of this Plateau–Staffa–Plateau lava succession indicate that magma reservoirs deep in the crust were succeeded by shallow melts during a period of crustal extension. This phase of shallow melting induced topographical instability and formation of sedimentary interbeds and correlative unconformities that characterise the Staffa-type lava succession. Subsequent compressive tectonics forced a return to deep crustal melts. Interbed palynofloral compositional data indicate that eruption of the later Plateau-type lavas likely took place within a period of ~2.5 million years during the Selandian to early Thanetian period.

Paleocene–Eocene age glendonites from the Mid-Norwegian Margin – indicators of cold snaps in the hothouse?

Abstract. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 396 to the mid-Norwegian margin recovered > 1300 m of pristinely preserved, volcanic-ash-rich sediments deposited during the late Paleocene and early Eocene from close to the centre of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Remarkably, many of these cores contain glendonites, pseudomorphs after the purported cold-water mineral ikaite, from sediments dated to the late Paleocene and early Eocene. These time intervals span some of the hottest climates of the Cenozoic, including the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Global deep-ocean temperatures are not thought to have dropped below 10 ∘C at any point during this time, making the occurrence of supposedly cold-water (near-freezing temperature) glendonite pseudomorphs seemingly paradoxical. This study presents a detailed sedimentological, geochemical, and microscopic study of the IODP Exp. 396 glendonites and presents an updated model for the ikaite-to-calcite transformation for these glendonites. Specifically, we show that early diagenesis of basaltic ashes of the NAIP appear to have chemically promoted ikaite growth in the sediments in this region. Together with existing knowledge of late Paleocene and early Eocene glendonites from Svalbard to the north and early Eocene glendonites from Denmark to the south, these new glendonite finds possibly imply episodic, short-duration, and likely localized cooling in the Nordic Seas region, which may have been directly or indirectly linked to the emplacement of the NAIP.

Biogeochemical responses to global warming during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum in the eastern Tethys

The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ∼56 Ma) represents a rapid and sustained climatic perturbation that lasted for ∼170 kyr and coincided with the emplacement of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Global average temperature increased by 5 to 9 °C, which was likely triggered by a rapid emission of 13C-depleted CO2. Numerous sites from the deep oceans have been studied for the PETM, but subtropical shallow-water eastern Tethys remains poorly understood despite its importance in regulating heat and moisture transport. Prior studies on calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and stable isotopes of marine carbonates confirmed the occurrence of the PETM in the Tarim Basin of the eastern Tethys in northwestern China. Here we present new, high–resolution major, trace and rare earth element geochemical data, and clay mineral records at the Kuzigongsu section in the Tarim Basin to assess the biogeochemical responses of the eastern Tethys to climatic forcings across the PETM. Chemical weathering proxies (chemical index of alteration [CIA], chemical index of weathering [CIW], plagioclase index of alteration [PIA], and Rb/Sr) support an enhanced terrestrial input shortly after the PETM onset, possibly due to intensified chemical weathering. Furthermore, clay mineral assemblage is dominated by illite and illite/smectite during the PETM, implying increased physical weathering. The PETM is also characterized by an increase in nutrient-sensitive elements such as P, Ni, and Cu and higher abundance of nutrient–sensitive calcareous nannofossils, suggesting an intensification of marine primary productivity. Meanwhile, the Tarim Basin may have encountered episodic bottom water deoxygenation supported by an increase in the enrichment factor of redox–sensitive elements such as U and V. The integrated geochemical proxy records suggest that the eastern Tethys has encountered profound ecosystem stress imposed by elevated nutrient fluxes and ocean deoxygenation, which may have been amplified by simultaneously intensified chemical and physical weathering during the PETM.

Petrological Evolution and Mass Redistribution in Basaltic Fault Zones: An Example From the Faroe Islands, North Atlantic Igneous Province

AbstractFault rock petrology exerts an important influence on the permeability structure and mechanical properties of fault zones. Slip‐related deformation on upper‐crustal faults in basaltic rocks is closely associated with fluid‐rock interaction, altering the distribution of physical properties within the fault. Here, we present quantitative descriptions of the geochemical and petrological evolution of basalt‐derived fault rocks from three passively exhumed fault zones in the Faroe Islands. Fault‐rock petrology is determined by optical petrography and automated phase identification based on micrometer‐scale chemical maps from scanning electron microscope X‐ray spectroscopy. Geochemical evolution is assessed from major and trace element composition measured by X‐ray fluorescence. The fault rocks show intense fluid‐mediated alteration from a tholeiitic basalt protolith in the damage zones, and mechanical mixing in the fault cores. Pervasive alteration occurs early during fault zone evolution, with incipient fault damage increasing permeability and allowing along‐fault percolation of carbonated meteoric water, increasing fluid‐rock ratios. Our results suggest that the only mobile species within the fault zones are Ca, Si, and Al, which are leached during the hydrolysis of volcanic glass and plagioclase, and CO2, which is added by percolating waters. These species are transported from the damage zones into the fault cores, where they precipitate as zeolite and calcite cement in veins and hydrothermal breccias. We propose that solutes are replenished by cement dissolution through pressure‐solution during cataclastic creep, during repeated cycles of hydrofracture and cementation. The fault zones are natural reactors for fluid‐mediated alteration by CO2 and water, while other species are redistributed within the fault zones.

Tracing North Atlantic volcanism and seaway connectivity across the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)

Abstract. There is a temporal correlation between the peak activity of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) and the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), suggesting that the NAIP may have initiated and/or prolonged this extreme warming event. However, corroborating a causal relationship is hampered by a scarcity of expanded sedimentary records that contain both climatic and volcanic proxies. One locality hosting such a record is the island of Fur in Denmark, where an expanded pre- to post-PETM succession containing hundreds of NAIP ash layers is exceptionally well preserved. We compiled a range of environmental proxies, including mercury (Hg) anomalies, paleotemperature proxies, and lithium (Li) and osmium (Os) isotopes, to trace NAIP activity, hydrological changes, weathering, and seawater connectivity across this interval. Volcanic proxies suggest that NAIP activity was elevated before the PETM and appears to have peaked during the body of the δ13C excursion but decreased considerably during the PETM recovery. This suggests that the acme in NAIP activity, dominated by flood basalt volcanism and thermogenic degassing from contact metamorphism, was likely confined to just ∼ 200 kyr (ca. 56.0–55.8 Ma). The hundreds of thick (> 1 cm) basaltic ashes in the post-PETM strata likely represent a change from effusive to explosive activity, rather than an increase in NAIP activity. Detrital δ7Li values and clay abundances suggest that volcanic ash production increased the basaltic reactive surface area, likely enhancing silicate weathering and atmospheric carbon sequestration in the early Eocene. Signals in lipid biomarkers and Os isotopes, traditionally used to trace paleotemperature and weathering changes, are used here to track seaway connectivity. These proxies indicate that the North Sea was rapidly cut off from the North Atlantic in under 12 kyr during the PETM recovery due to NAIP thermal uplift. Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that the emplacement of the NAIP had a profound and complex impact on Paleocene–Eocene climate, both directly through volcanic and thermogenic degassing and indirectly by driving regional uplift and changing seaway connectivity.

Shallow-water hydrothermal venting linked to the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum

The Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a global warming event of 5–6 °C around 56 million years ago caused by input of carbon into the ocean and atmosphere. Hydrothermal venting of greenhouse gases produced in contact aureoles surrounding magmatic intrusions in the North Atlantic Igneous Province have been proposed to play a key role in the PETM carbon-cycle perturbation, but the precise timing, magnitude and climatic impact of such venting remains uncertain. Here we present seismic data and the results of a five-borehole transect sampling the crater of a hydrothermal vent complex in the Northeast Atlantic. Stable carbon isotope stratigraphy and dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy reveal a negative carbon isotope excursion coincident with the appearance of the index taxon Apectodinium augustum in the vent crater, firmly tying the infill to the PETM. The shape of the crater and stratified sediments suggests large-scale explosive gas release during the initial phase of vent formation followed by rapid, but largely undisturbed, diatomite-rich infill. Moreover, we show that these vents erupted in very shallow water across the North Atlantic Igneous Province, such that volatile emissions would have entered the atmosphere almost directly without oxidation to CO2 and at the onset of the PETM.

The Origin of Ultramafic Complexes with Melilitolites and Carbonatites: A Petrological Comparison of the Gardiner (E Greenland) and Kovdor (Russia) Intrusions

Abstract In many alkaline complexes, large amounts of ultramafic rocks occur together with carbonatites, melilitolites and other alkaline silicate rocks. There is an ongoing debate if and how these contrasting lithologies were formed by differentiation of a common, mantle-derived silicate magma or rather by metasomatic processes between carbonatite and country rocks. In order to find petrological evidence for one or the other, two key examples, the Gardiner (E Greenland) and Kovdor (Russia) complexes are compared in this study. Despite their similar tectonic setting and succession of rock types, they show significant differences in the texture and mineral composition of ultramafic rocks. Ultramafic rocks from Kovdor include calcite- and biotite-rich dunites and pyroxenites without typical cumulate textures. They consist of Ni-poor forsterite, Cr-poor diopside and Ni-Cr-poor spinel and are possibly metasomatic reaction products between mantle-derived carbonatite melts and silicic host rocks. Similar ultramafic rocks are associated with carbonatites e. g. at Palabora (South Africa), Afrikanda (Russia), and Salitre (Brazil). In contrast, the ultramafic rocks from Gardiner show well-preserved cumulate textures and consist of Ni-rich forsterite, Cr-rich diopside as well as Cr-Ni-Ti-rich spinel and also contain F-Cl-rich apatite. They record an increase in aSiO2 from dunite to pyroxenite at similar fO2 (ΔFMQ ~ +1.2, with FMQ = fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer), indicating that these rocks represent cumulates of an evolving, moderately oxidized mafic melt derived from a Ti-rich mantle source, similar to other rocks of the North Atlantic igneous province. In contrast to systems like Kovdor where carbonatite metasomatism is likely dominant, Ti-rich parental silicate magmas can abundantly crystallize Ti phases, as recorded by massive perovskite cumulates in Gardiner melilitolites. This can effectively scavenge HFSE from the magmatic system early in its evolution and likely explains HFSE-barren carbonatites at Gardiner, while those from Kovdor are highly HFSE-enriched. In summary, the results of our study provide strong textural and mineral chemical evidence that ultramafic rocks in alkaline complexes can be of both cumulate and metasomatic origin; the specific type has an important bearing on their HFSE enrichment and on the types of ores present in such complexes.

New insights on the origin of Barra volcanic ridge system, offshore Ireland: A long-distance influence of the Iceland mantle plume

The Iceland Plume has significantly impacted the North Atlantic region. Igneous edifices and large seamounts in the Rockall region were linked to Iceland plume pulsations during the Late Cretaceous to Mid-Eocene. In the south of the Rockall Basin a chain of northwest-southeast trending volcanic ridges known as the Barra Volcanic Ridge System (BVRS) have been identified on seismic and magnetic datasets. However, the timing, morphology, extent, and emplacement mechanism of the BVRS are not well understood. To investigate the volcanic ridge system, we analyze a 360-km-long pre-stack time migrated seismic section along the margin, which covers the southern extent of BVRS. The high velocity (4.5–4.8 km/s) obtained by using first arrival travel time tomography of downward continued data set, high magnetic anomaly and the typical morphology of the ridges suggest that they could be volcanoes of basaltic compositions. The integration of gravity and seismic data constrain the crustal structure and thickness, which indicates that the crust could be as thin as 4 km beneath the BVRS, requiring a maximum stretching factor >6. Folded compressional structures and lava flows within the Early Paleocene to Mid-Eocene sediments draping the volcanic ridges, suggest that these volcanic intrusions possibly have occurred post Early Paleocene age, which is approximately the same time-period when Iceland mantle plume arrived in the Rockall region. These results suggest that the BVRS developed because of pre-existing lithospheric configuration in the Rockall Basin and could be one of the southernmost volcanic provinces of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP).

Reservoir properties and reactivity of the Faroe Islands Basalt Group: Investigating the potential for CO2 storage in the North Atlantic Igneous Province

Offshore injection of CO2 into volcanic sequences of the North Atlantic Igneous Province may present a large-scale, permanent storage option through carbonate mineralization. To investigate this potential, onshore studies of reservoir properties and reactivity of the subaerially erupted Faroe Islands Basalt Group have been conducted. Outcrop and borehole samples reveal that the lava flow crusts commonly contain vesicles that have been filled with secondary minerals due to hydrothermal fluid circulation, however, unmineralized and highly porous layers do occur. Bulk density measurements, micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) image analysis, and microscope studies of samples from onshore boreholes give present-day porosities ranging from 0.5% to 36.2% in the volcanic sequences. The unmineralized brecciated lava flow crusts contain the largest estimated porosity and simulated absolute permeability (reaching up to 10−12 m2). µ-CT studies of the mineralized, brecciated flow crusts indicate initial porosities reaching up to 45%, before clogging. Kinetic experiments of rock dissolution show that the reactivity of the basalt and volcaniclastic sediments depends on the alteration state with more altered basalt being less reactive. However, the presence of reactive, high porosity, and high permeability flow crusts prior to clogging indicate the existence of promising and very large CO2 reservoirs in less altered offshore sequences.

Mercury isotope evidence for protracted North Atlantic magmatism during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ∼56 Ma) was a major hyperthermal event that has been linked to CO2 release from the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Anomalously high sedimentary mercury (Hg) concentrations, a proxy for volcanism, have been recorded across the PETM, but the precise mechanistic links between NAIP emplacement and the event are unclear. Here, we present Hg abundance and Hg-isotope data across a thick, deep-marine sedimentary record deposited in close proximity to active NAIP volcanism. A marked transient shift of Δ199Hg towards higher values occurs within the PETM onset, indicating a causal link to extrusive volcanic activity from the NAIP. Increasing Δ199Hg values through the body of the PETM indicate a protracted interval of magmatism. Towards the end of, and after, the PETM the data suggest an overall waning influence of direct volcanogenic Hg outgassing. Our data can explain both the triggering mechanism and long duration of the PETM.

Hot or Fertile Origin for Continental Break-Up Flood Basalts: Insights from Olivine Systematics

Abstract The break-up of supercontinents is often temporally and spatially associated with large outpourings of basaltic magmas in the form of large igneous provinces (LIPs) and seaward dipping reflectors (SDRs). A widespread view is that the upwelling of hot mantle plumes drives both continental break-up and generation of associated LIPs. This is supported by petrologic estimates of the temperature from olivine-melt thermometers applied to basaltic magmas. These thermometers must be applied to a primary mantle-derived magma, requiring the selection of an appropriate primitive magma and an assumption of how much olivine is to be back-added to correct for fractional crystallization. We evaluated the effects of these assumptions on formation temperatures by compiling and analyzing a database of North Atlantic igneous province (NAIP) and Central Atlantic magmatic province (CAMP) lavas and olivines. Ni and FeOT systematics suggest that many picrite magmas have undergone olivine addition and are not true liquids, requiring careful selection of primitive magmas. The maximum amount of back-added olivine was determined by constraining mantle peridotite melt fractions for a range of possible mantle potential temperatures and continental lithosphere thicknesses. Using an empirical relationship between melting degree and forsterite (Fo) content, we show that the possible maximum olivine forsterite content in equilibrium with NAIP magmas is 90.9, which is lower than the maximum olivine forsterite content observed in the NAIP olivine population. We infer primary magmas that lead to mantle potential temperatures of 1420°C for the NAIP and 1330°C for CAMP. Using a similar approach for consistency, we estimate a mantle potential temperature of 1350°C for mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). Our results suggest that LIPs associated with continental break-up are not significantly hotter than MORB, which suggests that continental break-up may not be driven by deep-seated thermal plumes. Instead, we suggest that such voluminous magmatism might be related to preferential melting of fertile components within the lithosphere triggered by far-field extensional stresses.

Ti-Rich Tholeiitic Picrites from the Prinsen af Wales Bjerge, East Greenland, and Evidence for a Pyroxene-Rich Mantle Source at Breakup in the North Atlantic

Abstract Highly magnesian, olivine-phyric tholeiitic basaltic and picritic lavas with >5 wt% TiO2 from the Prinsen af Wales Bjerge (PAWB) region are chemically distinct from all other Paleogene East Greenland flood basalts and from basalts in the North Atlantic Igneous Province. The ~100-m-thick lava succession rests on the 61 Ma Urbjerget Formation, is intercalated with volcaniclastic sediments, and has 57 Ma 40Ar/39Ar stepwise degassing ages. It is part of the Milne Land Formation, the first of the major flood basalt formations in East Greenland, and the result of plume impingement of the Kangerlussuaq area in East Greenland during the initial stages of continental breakup. The Ti-rich picrites have relatively primitive compositions and contain Mn- and Ni-rich olivine up to Fo88. Intermediate to high 87Sr/86Sri (0.7034–0.7044) and low Pb isotopic compositions reflect 4–11% crustal contamination, whereas the initial εNd (+4 − +5) and 187Os/188Os ratios (0.121–0.129) overlap with recent Icelandic basalts and appear little affected by contamination processes. The mantle source of the Ti-rich picrites contained garnet and was pyroxene-rich and similar to that of later low-Si alkaline basalts. The Ti-rich picrites of the PAWB, similar to other Ti-rich melts of the Kangerlussuaq region, represent analogies of MgO-rich and variably TiO2-enriched melts from pyroxene rich sources of traditionally accepted mantle plumes like Hawaii.

Transient mobilization of subcrustal carbon coincident with Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum

Plume magmatism and continental breakup led to the opening of the northeast Atlantic Ocean during the globally warm early Cenozoic. This warmth culminated in a transient (170 thousand year, kyr) hyperthermal event associated with a large, if poorly constrained, emission of carbon called the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) 56 million years ago (Ma). Methane from hydrothermal vents in the coeval North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) has been proposed as the trigger, though isotopic constraints from deep sea sediments have instead implicated direct volcanic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Here we calculate that background levels of volcanic outgassing from mid-ocean ridges and large igneous provinces yield only one-fifth of the carbon required to trigger the hyperthermal. However, geochemical analyses of volcanic sequences spanning the rift-to-drift phase of the NAIP indicate a sudden ~220 kyr-long intensification of magmatic activity coincident with the PETM. This was likely driven by thinning and enhanced decompression melting of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle, which critically contained a high proportion of carbon-rich metasomatic carbonates. Melting models and coupled tectonic–geochemical simulations indicate that >104 gigatons of subcrustal carbon was mobilized into the ocean and atmosphere sufficiently rapidly to explain the scale and pace of the PETM. A change in the style of rifting in the North Atlantic led to carbon fluxes from subcrustal melting that helped trigger the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, according to geochemical analyses of volcanic sequences as well as melting and tectonic modelling.

Enhanced continental chemical weathering during the multiple early Eocene hyperthermals: New constraints from the southern Indian Ocean

Multiple short-term (<105 years) global warming events (“hyperthermals”) occurred throughout the early Eocene. Chemical weathering of continental silicate rocks is considered to have played a key role in recovery from these transient global warming events via consumption of excess atmospheric CO2. However, although evidence of this negative feedback has been reported for the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), the effectiveness of chemical weathering during other transient hyperthermals remains poorly constrained. Here, we newly report early Eocene marine Os isotope records including Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2), the I1 event, and ETM3 at Ocean Drilling Program Site 752 in the southern Indian Ocean. We demonstrate that marine 187Os/188Os increased during the hyperthermal events that were less severe than the PETM. The intensity of continental silicate weathering increased by 18%–22%, 17%–21%, and 13%–16% during ETM2, the I1 event, and ETM3, respectively, compared to the background conditions. Based on a reconsidered formulation of an Os mass-balance model, the intensity of continental silicate weathering during the PETM was reassessed to be a 34%–42% increase relative to the pre-PETM level. Thus, the continental chemical weathering flux during the Eocene hyperthermals may have been up to half as large as that of the PETM. It is noteworthy that the ordering of the changes in continental silicate weathering did not agree with the ordering of the seawater temperature rise among these events. This weathering–warming inconsistency might be attributable to (1) potential underestimation of continental silicate weathering due to the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and related basalt weathering, such as the North Atlantic Igneous Province and Siletzia in western North America, (2) changes in the background level of weathering intensity, and/or (3) a secular decrease in continental weatherability through the long-lasting early Eocene warming trend.

The Paleogene records the most prominent global climate change of the Cenozoic Era with a shift from a greenhouse to an icehouse world. Several transient hyperthermal events punctuated this long-term evolution. The most pronounced and the best known of these is the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM-56 Ma). This event is associated with global warming, a worldwide perturbation of the carbon cycle, and significant biotic changes. The PETM is primarily recorded by a sharp negative carbon isotope excursion (NCIE) in both carbonates and organic matter of sedimentary successions. The source of the 13C-depleted carbon for the NCIE and whether it was released in one or numerous events is still debated. Several carbon sources have been proposed to explain the PETM-NCIE and the mechanisms that triggered this abrupt climate upheaval. These include, among others, the magmatic and thermogenic release of carbon associated with the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces (LIP). One proxy for tracking past volcanic emissions in the geological record and testing hypothetical links between volcanism and hyperthermals is the use of mercury (Hg) anomalies found in marine and continental sedimentary successions. Here, we present new high-resolution mercury and stable isotopic records from a continental-marine transect in Pyrenean peripheral basins during the PETM. Compared to deeper marine settings, the significant sedimentation rate that characterizes these high-accommodation and high sediment-supply environments allows the preservation of expanded successions, providing reliable information about the fluctuations of Hg concentration in deposits across the PETM. Our data reveal two large negative carbon excursions across the studied successions. Based on biostratigraphy and the similarity of shape and amplitude of the isotopic excursions with global records, we interpret the largest NCIE as the PETM. This main excursion is preceded by another that we interpret as the Pre-Onset Excursion (POE), found in other profiles worldwide. We find that the POE and the PETM are, in our studied sections, systematically associated with significant Hg anomalies regardless of the depositional environment. These results suggest that large pulses of volcanism, possibly related to the North Atlantic Igneous Province's emplacement, contributed to the onset and possibly also to the long duration of the PETM. Furthermore, the record of higher Hg anomalies in nearshore than offshore settings suggests a massive collapse of terrestrial ecosystems linked to volcanism-driven environmental change triggered significant Hg loading in shallow marine ecosystems. If this is correct, these findings confirm the primary role of the solid Earth in determining past terrestrial climates.

Methodology for Evaluating the North Atlantic Igneous Province Reveals Multiple Hotspots at Breakup

AbstractThe North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) has been the focus of numerous studies. However, a systematic integrated methodology to assess the NAIP, has so far been lacking. For this purpose, a synclinal oceanic rift approach is developed from the stratigraphic record. Mechanisms are addressed combining trace element and seismic velocity data as a proxy for excess mantle potential temperature (ΔTp), using simple mantle melting models. Unconformities play a major role in this assessment, providing evidence for a drop in ΔTp to ambient levels (≤50°C). Three phases can be delineated in the stratigraphic record: a (a) Pre‐; (b) Syn‐; and (c) Post‐breakup phase. The Syn‐breakup phase is bound at the base by the Breakup Unconformity and at the top by the Magmatic Unconformity. At breakup, magmatic crustal thickness (H) can be estimated from addition of basalt‐ and Lower Igneous Crust isopachs. These seismic estimations can be further constrained by observations on volcanic transport directions. This allows differentiation between hotspots and Volcanic Passive Margins (VPMs), where hotspots are characterized by continuous ΔTp amplitude variations, whereas VPMs only display declining or absent fluctuations post breakup. On Iceland and the Greenland‐Iceland‐Faroe Ridge, H is primary controlled by ΔTp fluctuations promoting ridge jumps and second, associated fluctuating active upwelling ratio (χ ∼ 2–4). Results suggest that there were at least three hotspots active at breakup. The West Greenland and proto‐Jan Mayen hotspots lost importance in the Oligocene, while Iceland remained and is currently the main hotspot in the North Atlantic.

Interaction between volcanic and non-volcanic systems and its implication for prospectivity in the Faroe–Shetland Basin, NE Atlantic continental margin

Exploration in the Faroe–Shetland Basin on the Faroese Continental Shelf has revealed thick and complex volcanic successions and discovery of inter-volcanic oil-bearing siliciclastic sandstone fan deposits in the central parts of the basin. The possibility for such play types at the fringe of the North Atlantic Igneous Province requires a better understanding of the interaction between competing sedimentary and volcanic depositional transport systems. We have re-examined volcanic units in cuttings from exploration wells in the greater Judd Sub-basin area for evaluation of facies and geochemical affinity. This allows for chemostratigraphical correlation of wells to the absolute radiometrically age-constrained Faroe Islands Basalt Group. The collective well data were subsequently tied to a regional interpretation of 2D seismic data which facilitated a detailed interpretation of temporal development of the volcanic successions in the Judd Sub-basin area in terms of geometry, volcanic facies, depositional environment, and interdigitation with non-volcanic sedimentary units.The Judd Sub-basin was influenced by major volcanic phases during pre-breakup and syn-breakup. The influence was both direct, in the form of volcanic deposits, and indirect, in the form of obstructing established sedimentary transport systems and creating new provenance areas. The volcanic transport systems reached different areas of the Judd Sub-basin at different times during pre-breakup volcanism. The earliest incursion in the west was during late Mid Paleocene (T-sequence T31/T32). With at least three stratigraphically discrete incursions of volcanic material into the Judd Sub-basin, possibilities arise for sub- and inter-volcanic stratigraphic and structural traps for each incursion.
